Fortress Clash

The Fortress Clash notebook · Free to use

Read a strategy card as a sequence of questions

A free card-reading exercise for distinguishing a printed rule, your interpretation, and the question a playtest should answer.

Published October 15, 2026 · Programming Securely · Original exercise with illustrative examples

Start with the current printed card

Choose one card from the version you are actually reviewing. Read its requirement, costs, target, timing, and effect separately. Do not assume that an older screenshot describes the current card. Fortress Clash is in development; the public marketing site is not a substitute for the active rules and card data used by a particular build.

Write an example without inventing a rule

Describe a simple board situation and the decision you expect the card to offer. Keep the printed wording separate from your interpretation. If a target, timing window, or interaction is unclear, write a question instead of adding a rule to make the example work. A useful test has an expected observation that can be compared with the current implementation.

Review the result at the right version

Record which card and build were used, what happened, and whether it answered the original question. A single successful interaction does not establish that all combinations are correct or balanced. Keep feedback specific enough for a designer to reproduce. This worksheet contains no card database or playable match; it prepares your reading and test notes without claiming a public game release.

Worked example

A small situation to try

Illustrative exercise: a fictional card says it affects one eligible unit. The reader records the exact wording, sketches a board with two possible units, and asks what makes a unit eligible. They do not invent a new target rule. A later authorized playtest should compare the displayed choices with the current rule definition.

Identify the printed card or source you are reviewing.

Keep the original rule distinct from your reading.

Describe one board decision without inventing a rule.

State what would answer the question, then record the actual version and result.
